Tile Patterns and How They Affect How Much Tile You Buy

The tile pattern you choose does more than set the vibe of a room — it directly changes how much tile you need to buy and how cuts fall at the edges. A straight grid in a square room might get by with 10% waste. A herringbone hallway can push waste past 20%. If you don't account for the pattern upfront — and preview how it lays out in your room — you'll either overpay or run short.

Straight Lay (Grid)

Tiles are aligned in a simple grid — joints line up horizontally and vertically. This is the most efficient pattern because cuts are minimal in rectangular rooms.

Recommended waste: 10%

In a 10×10 foot laundry room with 12×12 tile, you'll mostly use full tiles. Cuts happen only at the perimeter. Straight lay is the baseline — if your room is simple and your tile is rectified, 10% is reliable.

50% Offset (Brick / Running Bond)

Each row is offset by half a tile length — like a brick wall. This is the most popular floor pattern for rectangular plank tile (6×24, 8×48). It hides lippage (height differences between tiles) and looks more dynamic than a grid.

Recommended waste: 12–15%

The offset creates more cuts at room edges, especially if the room width isn't evenly divisible by the tile length. You'll also have more pieces with cut ends that can't be reused elsewhere.

Pro tip: use a 33% offset instead of 50% if your tile manufacturer recommends it — some long planks can develop cracks at the midpoint when offset exactly half.

Diagonal (45°)

Tiles are set at a 45-degree angle to the walls. Diagonal layouts make small rooms feel larger and draw the eye. They also generate the most perimeter cuts of any common pattern.

Recommended waste: 15–18%

Every wall intersection produces a triangular cut. In a rectangular room, no tile along the edge is a simple straight cut. You'll go through more blades, more thinset, and more tile.

Diagonal also requires more planning — you need to find the center of the room and work outward in both directions along the diagonal axis.

Herringbone

Rectangular tiles are laid in a V-shaped zigzag. It's stunning in entryways, backsplashes, and accent walls. It's also the most wasteful common pattern.

Recommended waste: 18–22%

Herringbone creates cuts at every row transition. Many cut pieces are too small to reuse. Complex rooms with corners and doorways push waste even higher.

For a 40 sq ft powder room backsplash in herringbone with 3×12 subway tile, plan on buying enough tile for ~48–50 sq ft.

Stacked Vertical / Horizontal

Tiles are stacked without offset — all joints align. Popular on shower walls for a modern look. Waste is similar to straight lay.

Recommended waste: 10–12%

Slightly more than a floor grid because wall layouts often have more obstacles (niches, fixtures, shower heads).

Other Factors That Add Waste

Pattern isn't the only variable:

  • Irregular room shapes — add 3–5% on top of pattern waste
  • Large-format tile (24×48) — fewer cuts but higher cost per broken tile; add 10% minimum
  • Pattern matching / bookmatching — natural stone with veining may need 20%+ to align patterns
  • Niches and benches — each cutout is a full tile sacrificed

How to Calculate

  1. Measure room square footage
  2. Look up waste % for your pattern (table above)
  3. Multiply: 100 sq ft × 1.15 (for 15% waste) = 115 sq ft to buy
  4. Round up to full boxes

Example: 80 sq ft bathroom floor, 50% offset plank tile:

  • 80 × 1.15 = 92 sq ft
  • Boxes cover 15 sq ft each → 92 ÷ 15 = 6.13 → buy 7 boxes
