Drywall is sold in full sheets, and every cut-off you can't reuse is money in the scrap pile. Estimating drywall isn't just about total square footage — it's about choosing sheet sizes that minimize seams and buying the right amount of everything else that goes with it.
Measure Walls and Ceiling
For a standard rectangular room, calculate each surface:
Walls: perimeter × ceiling height
Ceiling: length × width
A 12×14 room with 8-foot ceilings:
- Perimeter: (12 + 14) × 2 = 52 ft
- Wall area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
- Ceiling: 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft
- Total: 584 sq ft
Subtract openings if you want to be precise — a door (21 sq ft) and two windows (30 sq ft) brings it to 533 sq ft. Most drywall estimators round up instead of subtracting, because cut-off pieces from windows are often too small to reuse.
4×8 vs 4×12 Sheets

For 8-foot ceilings, 4×12 sheets hung vertically give you one seam at the 4-foot mark instead of a horizontal seam at mid-wall with 4×8 sheets. Fewer seams = less taping = faster finish.
The catch: 4×12 sheets are heavy (~110 lbs), awkward to carry, and won't fit in every stairwell or hallway. If you can't get them inside, 4×8 is the practical choice.
Sheet Count Calculation
584 sq ft ÷ 32 sq ft per sheet (4×8) = 18.25 → 19 sheets
584 sq ft ÷ 48 sq ft per sheet (4×12) = 12.17 → 13 sheets
Add waste (see below), and you're buying 20 sheets of 4×8 or 14 sheets of 4×12.

For our 12×14 room: 19 sheets + 8% = 21 sheets of 4×8, or 13 + 8% = 14 sheets of 4×12.
What Else to Buy
Drywall is only part of the job. For a ~600 sq ft room (walls + ceiling):
Screws: ~1 screw per square foot = 600 screws. Buy a 1-lb box (about 300 screws) × 2 boxes, or a 5-lb bucket for larger projects. Use 1-1/4 inch for 1/2-inch drywall on studs.
Joint tape: Paper tape for flat seams, mesh for patches. One 250-ft roll covers roughly 500–700 sq ft of finished surface (one layer of seams).
Joint compound (mud): Plan on one 4.5-gallon bucket for every 1,000 sq ft of drywall surface for a standard Level 4 finish. Our room needs about one bucket for taping and two coats.
Corner bead: Count outside corners. A standard bedroom has 4 vertical outside corners. Metal or vinyl bead comes in 8-ft and 10-ft lengths.
Primer: One gallon covers ~350 sq ft — two gallons for this room after mudding.

Layout Tips to Reduce Waste
- Plan your cuts on paper — sketch which sheets go where before you cut
- Use cut-offs for smaller walls — closet walls and soffits can often use pieces left from the main room
- Hang ceiling first, then walls (top-down). Wall sheets support ceiling edges.
- Stagger vertical seams — don't line up seams on adjacent sheets
- Place horizontal seams at door height when possible — less visible
Moisture-Resistant Drywall
Use green board (moisture-resistant) or cement board in bathrooms — at minimum on shower/tub surround walls. Regular 1/2-inch drywall is fine for bathroom ceilings and non-wet walls if you use good paint.
For shower enclosures, skip green board entirely and use cement board or a waterproof foam board system.
